If you wanted to be a detective, w/o being a cop could you?

I want to be a homicide detective , you know with crime scenes, But i do not want to have to be a police officer for like 10 years first. I mean i will go through the training and stuff, but i don't want to have a dangerous job and be shot or be a police officer for a long time.
